Knowledge shall Increase

Daniel 12:4–9

4But you, Daniel, shut up the words and seal the book, until the time of the end. Many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase.”

5Then I, Daniel, looked, and behold, two others stood, one on this bank of the stream and one on that bank of the stream. 6And someone said to the man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the stream, “How long shall it be till the end of these wonders?”

7And I heard the man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the stream; he raised his right hand and his left hand toward heaven and swore by him who lives forever that it would be for a time, times, and half a time, and that when the shattering of the power of the holy people comes to an end all these things would be finished.

8I heard, but I did not understand. Then I said, “O my lord, what shall be the outcome of these things?”

9He said, “Go your way, Daniel, for the words are shut up and sealed until the time of the end.

The second significant sign given to Daniel is that as mankind draws close to the end time, this seventieth week, that knowledge will increase.

Yesterday I talked about the other sign which was that travel will increase. But what caused the travel to increase? It was the explosion of knowledge.

The Hebrew word for “increase” (rabah) implies not only an addition of knowledge but also a multiplication – or a knowledge that is increasing exponentially.

Think about it, from very early history man spoke to each other and traveled by foot. At some point, communication became written and man traveled by horseback. From 6000 years ago until 1830 when the first train began operation in the US man communicated through writing and traveled by horseback. Suddenly there were trains, soon after the telegraph was invented. Life as we knew it had changed.

The following comparisons were suggested by someone who believes the earth is very old and that humans have been here millions of years. Nevertheless, his stats on information doubling are fascinating.

  • It took 4 million years of human existence to arrive at the “information density” of Rome in the year 1AD.
  • 1,500 years later, in the time of Leonardo DaVinci and the Renaissance, that information density had doubled.
  • The next doubling took 250 years, as marked by the beginning of the Industrial Revolution and the birth of democracy.
  • In [only] six years from 1967 to 1973, another doubling occurred.
  • By 1998, information doubling was estimated to occur every 18 months.

Are we in the time of information explosion? I don’t know, let me google it. Almost every human today has a cell phone with the computer technology that is obsolete every 2-5 years. The internet has given rise to a worldwide explosion of information.

Is Jesus coming back soon? How much better can cell phones get? I will let you be the judge, but I think it is very soon.
